MI calls for the clinician to treat the client as an equal partner and to avoid giving uninvited advice, confronting, instructing, directing, or issuing warnings. It is not a set of tactics to force the conversation or a means of "getting people to change." MI requires self-awareness and discipline from the clinician, as well as time and practice.
One form of psychotherapy that helps people better handle difficult situations, control strong emotions, and strengthen relationships is dialectical behavior therapy, or DBT. Although DBT is primarily concerned with the emotional and social aspects of life, it is based on cognitive behavioral therapy, or CBT. Many different mental health conditions can be treated and managed with the aid of DBT.
