About My Clients
Most of my clients are coping with illness, caregiving, or bereavement, or are struggling with effects of the climate crisis. It is normal that these huge life changes can exacerbate anxiety, sleep disturbance and relationship discord, among other difficulties. I provide complete acceptance of where you are, and teach many tools to relax the struggles in the process of adapting to life transitions.
My Background and Approach
Most people, after a new diagnosis or a loss feel lost and have a story that needs to be told and understood. My primary approach is meeting you where you are with respect and care. Under that umbrella, I use many tools to enrich your self knowing. Walking along side you as you look back at what happened, I support you to gain insight and understanding. If difficult experiences like medical trauma, or old re-activated childhood traumas are involved, I use body centered and mindfulness based methods which ease and free up trauma giving you breathing room and perspective. Integrating losses and big life changes takes time and self compassion. At some point you will be inspired by a vision of the future you want. When that time comes, I use tools which support you to clarify what your confident next steps will be so you can be done with therapy as soon as possible.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
The natural environment has been a profound and important partner in my own healing. My therapy practice is called Song Sparrow Counseling because I love birds and because the Song Sparrow sings such a distinctive song. I see the therapeutic journey to health and vitality being like recovering your own beautiful song. In working through my own losses, I gained a deep respect for the uniqueness of every loss and life transition. I believe that people can learn to have compassion for each painful part of themselves, and thereby heal themselves. I have seen how mindfulness is a key ingredient in that healing. I believe it can sometimes happen quite quickly with the right support. I live with my spouse in Lafayette, CO. When I am not providing therapy, I enjoy volunteering at her school Ziji Early Elementary, spending time with friends and family, playing soccer, gardening, home remodeling, and being with song sparrows and other creatures in the outdoors.
