The experience of relational trauma affects our ability to relate to ourselves and others. When one has endured childhood abuse, neglect, domestic violence, or any other event we perceive as threatening or traumatic, our brains may get stuck in patterns that keep us from healing completely. There are interventions that are successful in helping us break the patterns of trauma and learn new skills for living.

Depression sometimes feels like being stuck. Stuck in lies we tell ourselves and in self-defeating patterns. Depression is exhausting. Sometimes it is so hard to find motivation and we need help outside ourselves. Depression treatment focuses on the origins of symptoms, our own thoughts, and our coping skills.

Anxiety can be paralyzing and affect functioning on a daily basis. While the roots of depression tend to be in past experiences, anxiety relates to fear-based thoughts and worries about the future. Mindfulness-based therapies can help us stay grounded in the moment and learn to regulate physical anxiety responses.

Attachment theory refers to our attachments to caregivers in early childhood, as well as how these attachments affect our relationships throughout our lives. It speaks to our human tendency to do what is necessary to have our needs met. When early attachments are broken or damaged in some way, we may find ourselves feeling threatened when our needs are not met consistently. Attachment therapy helps us identify our needs, minimize harmful patterns of behavior, and find new ways of relating.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based treatment for mood disorders, personality disorders, and suicidal thoughts/ behaviors. DBT is helpful in working with emotional dysregulation and altering unwanted behavioral patterns. DBT is a mindfulness-based therapy that helps replace automatic behaviors with new, adaptive skills.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an evidence-based treatment for trauma, PTSD, anxiety, panic disorders and depression. EMDR is often chosen by clients because it does not require the client to discuss disturbing experiences in detail. EMDR is also used in combination with other therapies for a holistic treatment approach.
