About My Clients
I have worked with clients from any number of backgrounds and with just about every possible mental health challenge. Though, the clients I often have the most success with are those that have struggled to find therapeutic progress in past treatment. Whether that's complex trauma, generalized anxiety, or persistent depression, clients often benefit from my integrated approach that focuses on present moment awareness and self-acceptance.
My Background and Approach
I have practiced as a counselor for 6 years, and have been in the helping professions for 8. My career history includes working with domestic and sexual violence survivors, clients recovering from drug dependency, teens in a residential environment, foster children, and a "lifespan" population in multiple outpatient settings. Through this diverse work, I have learned that what most people need from a therapist is someone who will hear them without judgment, and will care about them without condition. My primary approach to counseling is grounded in Person Centered Therapy (PCT). This approach believes that all people have within themselves the resources and knowledge needed to be well. What they lack is not a personality deficit, but rather a failing of their environment. By creating an environment conducive to change, clients are able to learn to accept their whole selves and live a life based on who they really are, not who others expect them to be.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
I believe that diversity is beautiful and that all people deserve peace and safety. I believe that tolerance must not tolerate intolerance and that loving a person means standing up to those that would harm them. I believe that affirming a person is a good start but celebrating that person does everyone more good.
