About My Clients
I know what it's like to feel broken, like counseling just doesn't work for you. I felt frustrated with the experience of talk therapy, having some progress but digressing again. I specialize in working with clients who have experienced chronic disconnection in their lives, helping them understand what is actually going on in their brains and bodies when they are defensive, anxious, depressed, emotionally dysregulated, etc. Through understanding and "bottom-up" approaches we can get unstuck.
My Approach to Helping
I am a Licensed Professional and Addiction Counselor and a Certified Brain Coach. The foundation of my approach is honoring and respecting your brain, your body, your experiences, trusting that you are the ultimate expert on yourself. I view our mental health struggles from a neurobiological and trauma-informed framework, believing that the system of mental health focuses mainly on managing "disorders" and "symptoms" rather than why these struggles on there in the first place. I see your struggles as evidenced that something deeper is going on rather than the problem itself. I'm passionate about helping you understand the biology of what is going on in your brain and body with your struggles, how disconnection/trauma influence our developing nervous system, and how the larger cultural systems continue to influence us. I focus on using "bottom-up" approaches in therapy, helping you learn to expand your brain and body's tolerance of stress in a chaotic world.
Why I am a Good Fit for You
I am a counselor, but first I am just a regular human like you. I have my own struggles, passions, and hobbies and I have my very own counselor! When I am counselor, I make sure to be my full self with you and create a laid-back vibe in my counseling space. I enjoy being outside when it's note 110 in Texas. You'll catch me on long walks/hikes, working on my garden, or trying to do some native landscaping in my yard. But I also love video games, puzzles, board games, and some good TV. I'm obsessed with getting good sleep and my local library. I am also passionate about being involved in my local community with organizations that align with my values. I am currently involved with Keep Waco Beautiful, Waco Pride, and The Waco Foundations Race Equity Institute. I work daily to challenge and unlearn internal bias I have from living in systems of white supremacy, the patriarchy, capitalism, and heteronormativity.
