About My Clients
Have you been feeling like the candle is burning at both ends? Is the sensory overload of it all creating issues with your attempts to cope? It can be hard to ask for help--especially when you think everyone else has it "all figured out." Maybe you've practiced masking your feelings so long, you're not sure how to "unmask" them. An internal sense of safety can help us re-center when the world feels like it's spinning out of control (& trying to take us with it).
My Background and Approach
I have a diverse professional background and eclectic approach to treatment based on my clinical experience and training. I began my social work career working in treatment foster care with developmentally disabled youths and their families. This experience encouraged me to pursue a more clinical-focused career in trauma, and I went to work for the Trauma Disorders Program at Sheppard Pratt from 2012-2020. There I learned more about trauma than I could ever have imagined: the structural model of dissociation, inpatient and outpatient treatment of Complex PTSD, and comorbid conditions impacting traumatized populations. I have experience with DBT & CBT, and am familiar with psychodynamic concepts applicable to the treatment of trauma, specifically developmental and betrayal trauma. Since branching out on my own, I've completed several trainings that inform my approach to outpatient therapy, specifically Decolonizing Therapy for Black Folk and holistic approaches to trauma treatment.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
I am a non-binary femme inhabiting a white body. I recognize the privilege this position (whiteness) affords me, and I engage in regular self reflection to address how this privilege affects my practice of therapy. Additionally, I am a longtime therapy consumer myself, which I believe has impacted my ability to provide higher quality therapeutic services to others. Self awareness and cultural humility are extremely important values to me, and I welcome discussion of identity and our differences if this presents in our work together. I believe that Black lives matter, without exception. I also believe that Trans people have always been here and deserve protection. Our struggles are intertwined and our liberation will be collective. And I owe much of my knowledge on these topics to Black and brown healing practitioners that have historically been marginalized within the field of mental health.
