About My Clients
Living in anxiety can take a tremendous toll. If you feel you are just keeping afloat and need ground to stand on, therapy can help. I help clients relate with their anxiety, stress and depression in a way that opens them up to live their lives the way they would like. With flexibility instead of constriction. With openness and engagement instead of avoidance. With courage rather than with reticence. With purpose as the guiding light rather than the cheap relief offered through avoidance.
My Background and Approach
Over the last 10 years as a therapist my interest and enthusiasm about what I do has continued to grow. I use a combination of mindfulness and existential/humanistic approaches to cultivate greater presence and engagement in one's life. In addition to the practical tools and interventions I use, I am always looking to foster a sense of genuine curiosity and understanding in the people I work with. I have training in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), EMDR, Existential psychotherapy and Person-Centered Therapy which I find all work in tandem to ultimately enlarge one's life. They help to bring forth insight, courage and endurance to fully show up to the life fear and depression have been holding you back from. I studied clinical counseling in Portland, Oregon where I graduated with my master's degree in counseling before moving back to the Midwest and working in several mental health clinics including Mayo Clinic for the last 5 years. I am licensed in both Wisconsin and Minnesota.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
I am fascinated by the vast diversity of individual experience. I am not a therapist who views clients as a set of diagnostic labels or looks at them simply through the filter of a treatment modality. I ultimately strive to understand what is called the "phenomenology" or first-person perspective of your life. What is it like to be you? That is where I start. My clients are the experts in their lives and I am their as a fellow traveler to help them tap into their inner wisdom and strength.
