About My Clients

Life can feel really overwhelming, maybe you have fears about friends say about you when you are not around; or cannot sleep the night before a big exam; or cannot seem to stop intrusive irrational thoughts. In a world that seems to be becoming increasingly stressful managing one's mental health can feel like a mountain to high to summit. Behavioral work and choice theory can be your tools for the climb, and I cannot wait to teach you how to use them.

My Background and Approach

I have background in working with individuals working through everything from tough transitional periods to learning coping skills to better manage their depression. I got my master's degree from Western Michigan University in Counseling Psychology. I started out in the field of mental health working in an Autism Center as a behavioral technician here in west Michigan helping children improve their skills in managing their own emotions. I've been here in west Michigan since 2009 with most of my work in the field being focused on seeing individuals in transitional ages of adolescence or young adulthood (late teens-early 30s). In therapy clients will often think the therapist is the expert that can "fix" them. My personal philosophy is one that while I might be a therapist I cannot "fix" anyone, rather I can help be the sounding board for what you are already saying. Together we will work together to find what is bringing pain, and in this collaboration you'll find your own "fix".

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

My personal goal in this world is to one day, somehow, never need to counsel someone again. Not through leaving the field but rather through my job simply not being needed. This goal is not realistic or achievable but that is what drives me in counseling, the idea that from when I meet a client my goal is to get them to a point where they no longer need me. I provide a safe space for my clients, if you ever feel I am failing in this regard please call me out. My pronouns are he/him/his, and you may see me around town quite a bit as I am an active member of various communities in west Michigan; the largest being that I am an organizer for Grand Rapids Zine Fest.
