I have been working with families of people who have substance use and addiction issues for the last 9 years. I understand that codependency can become an addiction in itself, and enjoy teaching families how to combat enabling and walking on egg shells by being assertive and supporting recovery. I also have personally struggled with codependency in the past and offer a personal perspective for how to recover as a family member and loved one.

I am a Licensed Addiction Counselor, Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor, and Master Addiction Counselor. I have worked with people with substance use disorders for the last 9 years in inpatient, intensive outpatient, outpatient, and monitoring settings. I understand that recovery management is a lifestyle and offer expertise in how to use skills and put supports in place to have a recovery lifestyle.

I have been working with teenagers and young adults for the last 9 years. I understand developmentally what adolescents go through, and use that knowledge to teach adolescents helpful emotion regulation and distress tolerance skills. I also understand that teenagers are more likely to engage in risky behaviors and have intense emotions, which is why I focus on teaching teens how to be autonomous by using better problem solving skills.

I believe in myself as a motivational therapist. I believe in meeting a client where they are in the various stages of change, and also use strategies to help a client enhance their internal motivation to reach their goals. Sometimes I ask hard questions, in an attempt for a client to take a deep look at how their current behaviors might be holding them back or helping them make the changes they want to make.

Most of the coping skills I teach clients come from the Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation, and Interpersonal Effectiveness modules from DBT. I like how DBT takes a balanced approach to managing daily stressors and requires a client to analyze what is going on in the moment. I also find DBT skills to be easy to remember and practice.

I consider myself a Cognitive Behavioral Therapist, especially because I have taught graduate level classes about CBT for 3 years. I believe that by changing thoughts, behaviors and emotions can be changed, allowing clients to experience less distress and more contentment in their lives. I also believe in looking at core beliefs, or schemas, in terms of analyzing stuck points and finding out where certain negative thinking patterns come from.
