Ashley Sutherland

Hello! I’m a child/teen therapist specializing in play therapy and nervous system regulation. I work with kids ages 3-18 and their families.

in Littleton, CO

About My Clients

My child clients tend to have big emotions, whether due to stressful circumstances, trauma, neurodivergence, a sensitive temperament, or some combination of the above. Their caregivers want to support them by getting to the root of their struggles and going deeper than the standard “rewards and consequences” behavioral model. My clients often complete therapy with greater self-understanding, acceptance, confidence, and ability to manage their emotions and behaviors through life’s ups and downs.

My Background and Approach

I received my Master’s of Social Work from the University of Denver and obtained licensure while working in community mental health. Since then, I have worked exclusively with kids, teens, and their families. I have years of experience working in schools with clients of diverse cultural backgrounds and family structures. I have specialized training and certification in play therapy, which I believe is crucial in providing effective, developmentally appropriate therapy to young clients. I adapt my approach to the needs of each client so therapy takes place in the sweet spot between too easy and too overwhelming. I highly value parental involvement in therapy and share feedback after every session, so you aren’t kept in the dark about your child’s progress and feel equipped to support them at home. In addition to psychotherapy, I also offer the Safe and Sound Protocol, a polyvagal-informed listening therapy that promotes a more resilient nervous system and can be done in your home.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

I believe all kids deserve a space where they get to show up as their authentic selves and drop the “should’s” placed on them by schools, families, peers, and our broader society. I believe all people, including the youngest and most vulnerable among us, are deserving of care and respect. As a social worker, I support social justice movements both in the United States and abroad that advocate for and protect the marginalized and oppressed. I believe in naming and holding accountable unjust systems of power and control. Outside of work, I’m an introvert who is happiest spending time with my family and close friends (whether two- or four-legged) and getting outside. I love music and discovering new artists and try to keep a good book on hand—anything from self-development to crime novels. I’m always on the hunt for independent coffee shops, and as a therapist, I fully support bringing beverages to sessions :)
