As a therapist, I believe in meeting the client where they are. It is imperative to strip myself of my belief systems to be able to see things from the lens of the client. With this approach, the counselor's goal is to build rapport from the very first encounter. I want to assure the client that this therapeutic relationship's foundation is built on trust, respect, and free of judgement.

We all experience anxiety to some degree in our lives. Unfortunately, there are some people that live with an anxiety disorder. Anxiety can consist of elevated heart rate, excessive worry, inability to relax, increased irritability, and constant fear. As a therapist, I know it unrealistic to believe that someone can live without experiencing anxiety sometimes. However, my role is to prepare clients to identify his or her triggers along with being able to manage the intensity of anxiety.

Depression has a different effect on individuals. In fact, some fail to realize that they have suffered from depression after they have come out of that episode. Again, my goal is to aid the client in identifying when the symptoms begin, the intensity of the symptoms, and what is leading up to the symptoms. When dealing with depression, I assist my client with brainstorming things that bring them joy and helping them be intentional about creating joy for themselves.
