About My Clients

I work with parents, often new parents, who are figuring out how to build a new life together. Parenthood brings not just new responsibilities, but also a wholesale restructuring of the family system, one that can be painful and confusing. The families I work with are often struggling to define their new roles in a way that seems "fair." It's a difficult task anyway, but when you throw in exhaustion and overwhelm, it's easy for resentment and blame to creep into relationships.

My Background and Approach

I approach therapy from a strength-based lens, working from the assumption that my clients are doing the best they can. Usually they have found ways of communicating successfully in the past, and while some of those methods may not work anymore, others can be applied or reconfigured to address current problems. Many of my clients find themselves caught in cycles of conflict, repeating the same arguments again and again. I see my work as helping them to negotiate new visions for their relationships that work for all parties. Our conversations can help my clients to clarify their hopes for parenthood and partnership while identifying the obstacles to making those hopes come to fruition.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

I believe we live in a culture that has been ravaged by individualism, leaving many people isolated and without the support of family and community. Few people experience this lack as acutely as parents. The problem is compounded when individuals and couples don’t conform to societally sanctioned genders, sexualities, relationship structures. Too often therapy is seen as a place to figure out what is wrong with us rather than a place to explore how to better navigate the difficult world we live in. I also firmly believe it’s useful to laugh at the absurdity of the world around us, and that therapy can often be fun, even when times are tough.
