About My Clients

I have experience working with a range of clients. As someone that was adopted, I find joy in working with those involved in the adoption process and with adoption-related issues. Generally, topics such as self-concept and self-esteem, ways to manage anxiety and depression, attachment styles, personality/strength/skill development, exploring family dynamics, identity or sense of self, and learning routines/habits/goals that promote health and well-being are essentials in our work together.

My Background and Approach

In the process of obtaining my Masters of Science in Mental Health Counseling, I learned about many theories and leaders in the field of mental health. Some of my favorites are Alfred Adler, Carl Rogers, Carl Jung, and Martin Seligman. Much of my approach combines Adlerian principles with concepts from Seligman's positive psychology. I believe that there are order and design to who we are and that our childhood and experiences play a role in our formation. I believe there is a benefit in understanding our families, our personalities, and our identities more fully. From a place of understanding, people can explore what drives and what ails them. Once there is clarity about what exactly the problem is, people can start to build skills and make changes towards developing strengths and solutions. Imperative Qualities of the therapeutic process include compassion, respect, unconditional positive regard, attunement, listening, understanding, knowledge, encouragement, and compassion.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

I believe in people. I think people are amazing. I was raised in a Catholic, middle-class family. I identify mostly with Christianity. I think that our thoughts are generally more powerful than we give them credit for. I believe in faith, hope, and love as the most powerful virtues. I believe that optimism trumps pessimism 9 times out of 10. And I believe that if you fall off your horse, you get back on. I love music, play the drums, and have been writing for most of my life. I believe in artistic expression as a healing modality. I believe in human creativity. I was adopted and I see that as a blessing. I believe that my higher power was working for my good before I was even conscious. I believe that most of our problems are a matter of perspective. I believe that in the right light, you can find the good in every situation and every person. Therapy facilitates well-being by managing and overcoming barriers and supports striving towards being the best version of ourselves.
