Adolescence and early adulthood are definitely highly stressful times between studies, relational issues, money stress, and more. It is so important to develop healthy coping skills early on to deal with stress in a healthy manner. Some skills we will build on are based around the mind-body connection, mindfulness, and thought stopping.
Anxiety is steadily on the rise in our country, and it definitely does not discriminate between age, race, etc. It is a very powerful experience and can be extremely frightening, especially if you are new to it. I like to educate my clients on what is happening in the brain and body when anxiety shows itself, and more than anything I like to help my clients learn strategies to squash their anxiety monsters.
Throughout life we are constantly having to adapt and adjust to changes. Some people handle this better than others, and others feel at a loss in how to cope through said change. Whether it is grief, changing schools, moving, or loss of a first love, I feel confident that we can work together through the change in a way where you are left with feelings of acceptance and openness.
Gestalt therapy has a lot of focus in the 'here and now,' which I think is very important for people that struggle with chronic stress and anxiety. I also use this approach to help my clients stay grounded and to gain closure through unresolved issues.
CBT focuses on the way your thoughts impact your mood and emotions. This strategy is a great way to change your thought patterns into a way where you are able to take an active and realistic approach to coping with social anxiety, depression, and relationship issues. It is a more goal oriented and problem focused way of working towards life satisfaction.
Sometimes it is difficult to articulate exactly how you are feeling, especially when you are struggling with depression, with trust and opening up, and when feeling overwhelmed. Not only can art therapy help with explaining your feelings, but it is also a great stress reliever for people of all ages.
