About My Clients
My ideal client is a neurodivergent, Queer, or otherwise marginalized person who’s tired of masking, craving authenticity, and ready to explore their identity in a supportive, affirming space. You might be navigating late diagnosis, burnout, OCD, or big life shifts—and you’re looking for therapy that honors who you are, not who the world expects you to be.
My Background and Approach
Alex McLaughlin (they/them) is a late-diagnosed AuDHDer, PDAer, Queer, non-binary, chronically ill, disabled, fat and multiracial (Irish, Greek & Chinese) therapist based on Wahpekute land (Twin Cities, MN). Alex offers a neurodivergent-affirming, trauma-informed space where clients can unmask at their own pace, explore identity, reduce shame, and reconnect with their authentic selves. Therapy with Alex can support you in building self-compassion, navigating burnout, understanding your neurotype(s), and developing tools that actually work for your brain. Alex specializes in working with Autistic and ADHD clients, OCD, 2SLGBTQIA+ folks, PDAers, and disabled clients. They offer affirming autism/ADHD assessments and individual therapy for ages 6+. Alex integrates evidence-based approaches like ERP, I-CBT, TF-CBT, DBT, and parts work to create collaborative, personalized care that honors who you are; not who the world expects you to be.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
As an individual with multiply marginalized identities, I lean socialist, abolitionist, and believe we're ALL harmed by white normativity, Eurocentrism, cisnormativity, heteronormativity, capitalism, white supremacy, neuronormativity, & ableism, etc. and am BEYOND ready to burn all these systems down. I believe neurodivergence is a natural variation of the human experience and nothing to be "fixed." I believe systems of oppression disable us and cause us suffering, and harm. I believe that access to housing, healthcare, & well-balanced food are basic human rights. I believe Black Lives Matter, and work to decolonize the therapy space. I engage in continual learning, listening, taking accountability and growing as a white-passing individual. I am 420-friendly & kink and polyamorous affirming.
