Accepting Clients

Hello! I'm Alena, a clinical psychologist and researcher at EBTCS. Clients describe me as warm, affirming, funny, and direct.

Psychologist in Seattle, WA

About My Clients

I primarily specialize in helping people who struggle with eating and body image concerns, including conditions like anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, and ARFID. I also have specialized training in treating mental health concerns that co-occur with chronic medical conditions, like type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and cancer. My clients are all sizes, genders, and sexual orientations. I treat both adolescent and adult clients, and provide individual, family, and group therapy.

My Background and Approach

I am primarily a Dialectical Behavior Therapist. I teach people skills to manage complex emotions, tolerate distressing situations, develop relationship and conflict skills, and learn to be mindful and accepting of themselves. I work with clients who may be struggling with self-acceptance, and who also want to make a commitment to changing their eating, health, and behavior to build the life they want. My approach is affirming, direct, and compassionate, with a strong commitment to high-end care for LGBTQIA+ clients, clients with diabetes, and those in larger bodies. I also provide Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Family Based Treatment (FBT) for eating disorders. I work with my clients to determine which therapies have the strongest scientific evidence for treating each of their unique concerns or symptoms. Across therapies, I focus on each client’s inherent worth and resilience while also helping them change unhelpful thoughts and behaviors.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

As a researcher, I have published studies on weight stigma, LGBTQ+ discrimination, and disordered eating. I work to understand how these overlap with medical conditions, and how they are influenced by social relationships and environments. As a direct result, I am firmly committed to an inclusive, LGBTQ+ affirming, health-at-every-size approach to healthcare and to therapy.

I offer online counseling in the following states:
