Depression comes from the inability to accept an aspect of one's self or one's reality. Difficult things happen in all of our lives that create negative feelings. It's how we perceive of the situation and ourselves that we can control. My work with depression is based around creating a self-accepting view of ourselves in the process. I've met so many clients that are so hard on themselves. In these cases, I become an advocate for you!
I am certainly an expert in dealing with anxiety in my own life! I have learned some techniques along the way that have really helped me, and I am always excited to relieve those feelings for others since I know how uncomfortable it can be. Anxiety can feel like a monster yelling at us in our head. It turns out that fighting the monster only makes it grow. More importantly, one must face the monster to realize that it has no teeth.
Most of my professional experience stems from working with young men who are very angry. I quickly realized that anger is a secondary emotion. In other words... there are emotions that usually happen right before we become angry (disappointment, rejection, grief). Sometimes, angry is more socially acceptable to show than the other emotions. So in my work with anger, it is important to see what's going on underneath the anger, and to work with that directly in order to find healing.
