About My Clients
My ideal clients self-identify as members of geek and/or gaming culture. I work with many clients around challenges related to neurodiversity, often leading to feelings of depression or anxiety. Many of my clients struggle with navigating social situations, or social anxiety. I believe that our interests and hobbies tell us important information about our lives, and are useful doorways to help us understand ourselves and even to use them as a tool for personal growth.
My Background and Approach
I have spent many years building an understanding of intersection between geek and gaming culture and therapeutic practice. Through those experiences I helped found and develop the major programs for the nonprofit Game to Grow, using roleplaying games to build social confidence and competency. I believe that there is a reason behind our interests, and especially our strongest emotional reactions to stories that we experience. I utilize Narrative Therapy, some Drama Therapy, and Cognitive Behavior Therapies in my practice, though I'll often selectively borrow from other therapy techniques and perspectives when needed and most helpful for the client. I believe in the use of story and narrative within our lives. Understanding the story that we came from, the story of where we are headed, and even knowing the role that we play within the story of other's lives can give us great perspectives into ourselves.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
Games and geek hobbies are a major function within my own life. Through the popular culture of movies, TV, video games, and even board games I have found great personal insights and growth. Beyond my interests in geek and gaming culture, I also have a strong belief in the power of close family and friends for support, a lover of animals, and I have a strong appreciation for nature.
