About My Clients
I work with adults who struggle with their eating, body image, and weight loss. These difficulties often include being unable to stop thinking about food, having too many food rules, and excessively limiting calorie intake. Other challenges include stress eating, feeling out of control around food, constant dieting, an inability to maintain weight loss, and feeling like you hate your body. *Private pay and telehealth only, can provide a superbill for clients with out-of-network benefits
My Background and Approach
I am a clinical psychologist and for more than 15 years my research and clinical work have focused on disordered eating, obesity, and weight management. I am also a university professor, and I consult at a bariatric surgery program. I earned my PhD from Case Western Reserve University and completed my internship and fellowship at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). I have extensive experience working with adults who have struggled with weight loss, dieting, and body dissatisfaction. I also have experience working with individuals before and after bariatric surgery and with people using medical weight-loss treatments, including GLP-1 medications. I am curious, I work to establish a deep understanding of my client, and I believe that a strong relationship is central to creating meaningful change. I draw from evidence-based cognitive and behavioral treatments, incorporating newer approaches and practical skills from therapies such as Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT).
My Values as a Therapist
I believe there is no single “right” goal when it comes to weight, eating, and health. For some people, weight loss is an important goal, but I think it works best with psychological support. For others, weight loss may not be a useful outcome. I believe that regular physical movement, flexible eating, and eating foods that nourish the body promote health. I also believe in the importance of valuing aspects of oneself distinct from body shape, and I think it is possible to do this alongside the pursuit of physical wellness. I help adults struggling with food, body image, and weight develop more flexible, sustainable approaches while working toward the goals that are meaningful to them.
