About My Clients
My clients are what I like to call "smart, but stuck." If you experience anxiety, OCD, phobias, or panic attacks, you know how you can get tied into knots trying to arrange your life to control fearful thoughts and feelings. You might find yourself getting stuck in overthinking, repetitive actions, research, reassurance seeking, and avoidance of people, places, and situations that you used to enjoy. I help people get liberated from anxiety by getting unstuck from what doesn't work.
My Background and Approach
We all have thoughts and feelings that are uncomfortable and painful. Our society often tells us that we should be able to control, eliminate, or manage these thoughts and feelings. Unfortunately, the things we do to control, eliminate, or manage thoughts and feelings usually wind up making the problem worse. During my graduate education I was fortunate to learn about Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). These are two powerful approaches that emphasize letting go of unhelpful behaviors that are keeping you stuck, taking the power away from painful thoughts and feelings, and re-engaging with the things that really matter in life. My goal is to see you liberated from the fears, doubts, and habits that are holding you back so that you can do the things in life that currently seem impossible.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
I believe that no matter how restricted your life feels, and no matter how far away your ideal life seems, that we all have the capacity for meaningful change. Profound change doesn't have to be dramatic (although it can be), it can also be the steady accumulation of small steps. I've had my own struggles with anxiety, and I've personally experienced how the approaches I use can open up life in ways that I could not have imagined. I also believe that this process looks different for everyone and that nobody but you can choose what a good life means for you. I believe that most of us receive too much judgement, including from ourselves. I accept clients for who they are, where they are, with whatever difficult thoughts and feelings they have. As a therapist I work to help you discover what is most meaningful to you, while sharing my expertise in identifying what is getting in the way and giving you tools to approach the inevitable challenges in life.
