About My Clients
What drew me to social work originally was the desire to create more stigma-free spaces for substance use and mental health disorders, especially for our LGBTQ+ and BIPOC communities in Houston. I want to empower clients to live their lives to the fullest as their most authentic, capable, and optimal selves using a trauma-informed, client-centered, and integrative approach that draws from a multitude of therapeutic modalities (DBT, CBT, IFS, EMDR, Mindfulness, and Feminist Therapy). My Background and Approach
I am an LMSW (Licensed Master Social Worker) and graduate from the social work program at the University of Houston with a background in Anthropology and Biology. I am also beginning the process of becoming fully licensed as an LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker). I have non-profit social work experience specializing in the treatment of co-occurring disorders (concurrent mental health and substance use disorders). My work thus far has focused on reducing recidivism for crimes related to substances, administering harm reduction and overdose prevention services, and reducing access barriers to gainful employment and treatment for co-occurring disorders. Evidence-based practices I am trained in are motivational interviewing, psychoeducation, and SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment).
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
As a gay Black man, I understand how mental healthcare can fall short of addressing the root cause of psychological distress holistically, taking into account our unique lived experience. That is why I am beyond passionate to join Severance Therapy’s mission to provide affirming, inclusive care, and that you are equally excited to build this space with us.
