About My Clients

I am an LGBTQIA+ affirmative therapist. An affirmative therapist understands the experiences of LGBTQIA+ people, and understands the barriers and challenges they face. An affirmative therapist helps to navigate challenges and views mental health struggles from this perspective. They do not make any attempt to change someone’s identity. Affirmative therapists celebrate and support all aspects of identity, and seek to nurture self acceptance.

My Background and Approach

I use a variety of treatment styles, theories and interventions in my work, but underneath it all my main focus is providing a safe, empathic environment for you to truly explore yourself and every facet of your experience. This includes exploring sources of pain and hurt, as well as celebrating sources of hope and joy. I believe that one of the most powerful things we can do is truly learn to understand ourselves, accept ourselves, practice compassion for ourselves, and move forward in life allowing ourselves to be as authentic as possible.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

I earned my Masters degree from Northwestern University where I specialized in working with the LGBTQIA+ population. In addition to my clinical work I am an active volunteer with The Trevor Project, The Human Rights Campaign, and also belong to the Florida Association of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender issues in Counseling (FALGBTIC). In addition to being passionate about social justice and advocacy work, I pride myself on being an affirmative therapist in my practice. An affirmative therapist can provide a safe, supportive space for individuals to explore gender, sexuality and other aspects of their identity without judgment. Not all LGBTQIA+ people seek therapy for reasons related to their identity. However, having an affirmative therapist means they don’t have to teach their therapist what it means to be LGBTQIA+, they don’t have to fear judgment when speaking about sex, gender, attraction, relationships, or any part of their story.
