Competent care requires a commitment to continuous learning. Participating in education focused on gender identity formation and exploration helps me provide competent and affirming care. I have also completed a graduate certificate program for Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies at Temple University. This certification has helped prepare me better to meet our diverse community's needs.
As part of the SAGA Therapy collective, we work closely with our LGBTQ+ community to better understand and provide supportive services customized to our unique needs. One of the theoretical orientations I use in therapy is the Relational Cultural Theory, which proposes we heal in relationships with others. Our community can be a source of support, safety, and affirmation. Standing together we can find strength and purpose.
I use effective positive psychotherapy methods to promote self-understanding among clients and encourage them to adopt new attitudes and feelings towards life situations. Therapy is not a magic pill or a quick fix: therapy is a healing process that necessitates participation and investment from the client and therapist. But in the end, making small changes to self-defeating behavior and coping with feelings of sadness, fear, and pain can bring life-altering results.
