They often feel like the reason they are unhappy or feeling "blah" is because they are lazy, unmotivated, and ungrateful for the good things in their life. However, this is simply not true. As a marriage and family therapist that works solely with individuals (not couples or families), I approach therapy through a relational lens. In order to fully understand someone's current mental health struggles I believe I must also understand their experiences with the other people in their life, both past and present. Taking a psychodynamic approach to therapy means I consider and help clients gain insight into the way their childhood has influenced their current coping and patterns.

CBT has definitely gotten a bad reputation on social media lately, but it's an awesome and effective form of therapy when it's applied correctly. In my practice, I pull from CBT to help clients identify and challenge negative thought patterns, explore more helpful ways of thinking about and responding to situations, and to help provide them with actionable skills to manage the stressors in their day-to-day life.

Exposure and Response Prevention therapy (ERP) is the gold standard for treating OCD. ERP works by training your brain to allow obsessive thoughts to come and go without the need for constantly managing them. People with OCD find themselves constantly having to avoid things or situations that may trigger obsessions or engage in compulsions/rituals to reduce their anxiety and distress. ERP takes courage and a willingness to confront your fears. While that may sound scary- it's worth it and works!

OCD is a tortuous mental health disorder that on average, goes untreated for 17 years after symptoms first appear. The obsessions in OCD target things that directly violate the value system of the person with OCD and as a result are extremely shameful. Because of this, people with OCD keep their symptoms secret and don't get the help they need. I have a special place in my heart for working with clients with OCD because I have OCD and know how debilitating OCD is without effective treatment.
