I'll never forget the first time I filled out a standardized test in school. I was in elementary school and I remember the words "Choose One" being written in bold under the heading "Race." Biracial was not an option. I remember choosing white because I was the only nonwhite student in my class and I didn't want to be different. Thus began a long and complicated relationship with my racial identity. It's hard when you are forced to choose a box and it's hard when others automatically put you in a box. I enjoy helping clients explore the complexities of racial identity and the very real stress that it can cause.

Depression is hard to talk about. There is a shame and stigma around it. People unfairly associate depression with weakness and think people should just "get over it." Depression is a very real, very painful health concern that requires treatment. I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to help you learn how to manage your depression and get your life back. Anxiety can actually be our friend sometimes. It can help us get things done or warn us about potential danger. I discovered ACT about a year ago and fell in love with it. The trainings I have since received have shown me that a lot of what I did in my work was ACT, I just didn't know what it was called. During training, ACT encourages therapists to practice and use the techniques on themselves and I have seen ACT make a wonderful difference in my own life. ACT combines some aspects of CBT with mindfulness. Mindfulness has the power to help you tolerate emotions and feelings that normally feel too overwhelming. My favorite thing about ACT is that it isn't about getting rid of negative thoughts and feelings but instead learning ways to acknowledge them and make peace with them.

A lot of my training and background is in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. CBT helps you retrain your brain to think differently instead of jumping into negative thinking patterns and behavioral patterns. I also love to give homework and believe that CBT homework helps client's stay engaged in between sessions which is helpful for healing.
