“Say More About That” Show Notes: Episode #39 – How to help clients suffering from hypochondria and health anxiety

Jeff Guenther, MS, LPC on Nov 24, 2019 in Say More About That

Today I have fellow therapist Katie Playfair on the show to talk about health anxiety and hypochondria. I wanted her on the show because she specializes in treating illness anxiety disorder and I keep getting clients that I think might qualify for this diagnosis. She and I will define what illness anxiety disorder is, how sever it can be, how someone can start suffering from it, how it's different than other types of anxiety, how to cope with it, how to treat it and so much more.

Questions and topics I discuss with Gina in the episode:

  • What is IAD/health anxiety/hypochondriasis?
  • How sever can health anxiety and hypochondria be?
  • How does someone typically start suffering from health anxiety? Is it something we are born with? Can it come on later in life?
  • How does it differ from other types of worry and anxiety?
  • What are the Health consequences of IAD
  • Why is treating IAD scary as a non-medical mental health provider?
  • When do you collaborate with physicians?
  • What kind of Treatment is used?
  • Should therapists that are not trained in health anxiety refer a client to a practitioner that is?
  • How can a client make sure they are seeing a practitioner who is fully trained in health anxiety?
