This is my go-to approach when meeting with a client. This approach has proven to be effective to help clients who are dealing with anger, depression, anxiety, trauma, and more. It is a teaching model. I love that it is a teaching model because I am able to help my clients get to a point where they can utilize these tools themselves and they will no longer need me.
I believe this approach should be at the core of every session between a therapist and a client. By using this approach, I am able to quickly establish and build rapport with my clients, showcase my own personality, and demonstrate to clients that they are able to be their authentic themselves without fear of judgement or criticism.
I will sometimes utilize this approach in conjunction with a person-centered and/or CBT approach. Using this approach allows me to provide brief therapy services, determine what is working and what is not, and to change the perspective from the problem(s) to the solution(s).
I have worked with children and teens that present with a variety of issues such as anger, anxiety, depression, lack of communication skills, defiant behaviors, trouble controlling emotions, trouble calming down, etc. I have also conducted group sessions with children in the same age group to cover various topics such as social skills, anger management skills, communication skills, etc.
I have worked with clients (children, teens, and adults) that have experienced a significant loss in their life such as the loss of a family member, friend, job, self, etc. I have also conducted group sessions on the subject of grief and loss.
I have worked with clients (children, teens, and adults) that have experienced at least one of the following traumatic events: abuse, neglect, domestic violence, parent incarceration, divorce, alcohol/substance abuse, etc.)
