About My Clients

Some are more difficult to engage, and may even be resistant to the therapeutic process. Families and loved ones of youth with diverse attractional or gender identities, at-risk behaviors, legal system involvement or risk of involvement, or other concerns may have given up on engaging the youth productively. I have extensive experience with building rapport and engaging those who may be considered “hard to reach,” and I integrate the family, school, and other systems into therapy.

My Background and Approach

I earned my Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work (BSW) from the University of Arkansas, and my Master’s Degree in Social Work (MSW) from the University of Michigan. Originally from Fayetteville, AR, I base my practice on the importance of the therapeutic alliance, and employ warmth, radical empathy, radical acceptance, and a wide range of therapeutic techniques to provide my clients with the safe, reflective, productive, and dynamic space necessary to facilitate real change. Deeply rooted in Dialectical Behavior Therapy, I also integrate elements of Gestalt Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy, Structural Family Therapy, and other modalities that engage the person in their environment. I have extensive training and competency working with individuals with diverse SOGIE (Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Expression), and provide training and support on cultural competency with this population across the state.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

As an active member of the LGBTQ+ community, I leverage my privilege across oppressive systems to advocate for vulnerable populations, including remaining highly active in adjudicated spaces for trans youth. I facilitated the first instance of a felony-adjudicated trans youth in residential care receiving gender affirming therapy for the first time in the state of Michigan, and continue to advocate for access to such care in juvenile justice and other settings across the state. I am an outspoken advocate of Black Lives Matter, the addressing of white privilege, and the integration of identities of privilege within marginalized communities, particularly in Detroit and Wayne County.
