Whether it’s their relationship with family, friends, their partners, or even themselves, relationships are what brings the women I work with to therapy. For us in the queer community, navigating relationships in a culture of heteronormativity can be exceptionally challenging. We are often shamed and judged by our families, and sometimes by our faith/religion. We often struggle with being apologetically authentic in a world that often prefers that we hide. Some of us struggle with self-hate due to the many messages we were taught throughout our lives. As a result, many of us experience depression, anxiety, grief, and trauma.
