Talk therapy(psychotherapy) is very successful is working with individuals with depression and anxiety. I work with clients on changing thought patterns, and their current emotional state.
I have been working with Millennials who are interested in entrepreneurship, and how to get started and the stress of making the decision to leave our career. Along with coaching I assist with developing communication skills, being assertive and setting boundaries.
I find that most people know why they are deciding at this time to come to therapy. They know what they want to do, like end a relationship, or change jobs, but just need empowering on how to get there. I assist with the goal setting, and how they would like to obtain the goals set, by trusting the process, and focusing on what what they can do, instead of what they can not do or have not done.
I encourage individuals to start with a deep breathing exercise, to start the relaxation process, which leads to yoga and a daily mediation practice, even if only for them minutes per day. I also inform them that worrying is a form of negative mediation, which releases stress hormones, and can create physical illness.
I encourage saying positive affirmations daily, writing letters to their younger selves, journaling, discussing hope and dreams. I also help with changing negative cognitions into positive cognitions, again by giving homework and discussing at the next session.
I start with homework exercises that help the individual to identify their strengths, and resilience that has helped them to get this far. I help with motivating and actively listening, and in turn getting them to trust themselves.
