About My Clients

In school or at work, you are a high achieving go-getter who gets the job done and done well. Everyone leans on you for support: you are there for everyone, afraid of ever saying no and feeling guilty when you do say no. You spend so much time worrying about disappointing others. Despite praise and validation from others, you never feel “good enough.” Your loud inner critic is unkind, unforgiving, and, sometimes, downright cruel. You are exhausted from trying to pretend everything is ok.

My Background and Approach

I practice from a constructivist, narrative, and post-modern lens, which is a fancy way of saying that if you work with me, we will explore and try to make sense of the layers that make you … you! These layers certainly include the challenges you are going through but they also include your family, the immediate community around you, and the bigger systems at play (power, privilege, and marginalization/empowerment) that shape your day to day experiences. I utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, an evidence-based practice (aka something that is thoroughly researched) for shifting unhelpful thought patterns. I also utilize Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, a framework that challenges us to go beyond insight into our problems by empowering small shifts and changes.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

As a therapist, I am committed to helping my clients be the best they can be. This is an uphill battle when my clients’ lives are threatened on the daily by the world we live in. We know that racism, sexism, cis-sexism, homophobia aren’t just “bad” but they are bad for us and they negatively impact mental health and physical health. The personal is political. The political is personal. Mental health is political and personal. My politics are informed by my care and concern for my clients and I believe that systems of oppression must be dismantled in order to promote true mental health. My work as an ally will never end. I am committed to making my therapy sessions a safe space for clients from all backgrounds. I am committed to working with clients who are willing to trust me as an ally. I commit to avoiding microaggressions, reflecting/apologizing when/if I micro-aggress, having difficult conversations, clarifying assumptions, asking questions, and centering your experience.
