Licensed Clinical Social Worker in WASHINGTON, DC
I have been working with people with varying levels of substance abuse since beginning my career as a social worker. I take a non-judgemental and open stance towards substance use, and use methods of harm reduction if a person wants to explore reducing but not abstaining from use or quitting one but not all substances. I am familiar and supportive of 12-step methods, SMART recovery, and many other treatment modalities and believe in helping patients find the best methods for them.
I worked for nearly two years within an addictions treatment program at the Maryland Correctional Institution for Women, and then for another year+ in an outpatient clinic for individuals, primarily men, on federal probation after their re-entry from being incarcerated. These experiences and the learning I have done sense has made me passionate about the cyclical nature of trauma on people who are incarcerated and the systemic obstacles facing their successful re-entry to society.
I work frequently with patients with depression and anxiety and use talk therapy and make referrals as appropriate to psychiatrists who can treat their symptoms with medication. The psychiatrists I refer to take a holistic approach and provide genetic testing relevant to mental health and also screen for underlying medical issues that may be causing symptoms, and not just psychiatric causes.
