Adolescents are at high risk for mood challenges given new expectations, responsibilities, social pressures, and puberty. The combination of having ASD and going through 'normal' adolescent changes can feel like a 'double whammy' for people with ASD, as new issues arise and coping strategies that previously worked don't seem to work any longer. I help teens navigate these challenges and provide them with coping strategies that they can implement during stressful times and throughout their lives.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) includes what we used to call Asperger's. I've been working with individuals with ASD for about 20 years... my passion for this area is what compelled me to go to graduate school. I've conducted research in ASD, directed an autism clinic at a prestigious university, and have worked clinically with people with ASD for many years. I learn something new from each client with ASD given how unique each person is.
Having some anxiety is normal and can actually help us become activated and productive. But, too much anxiety, or anxiety that we feel we cannot control, can get in the way of our lives. I use evidence-based approaches (e.g., cognitive-behavior therapy) that is individualized to meet the needs of each client. This type of intervention is cooperative and action-based.
