About My Clients
Are your child's behaviors making you want to pull your hair out? The screaming, calls from school, and refusal to put video games away can make any caregiver want to hop a plane to the Caribbean for a week. Kids often express how they're feeling through their behaviors, but you don't always have a kid behavior: adult language dictionary. Sometimes you give them a tablet and let them watch videos just to get a few moments of peace and quiet.
My Background and Approach
As a former special education teacher, I specialize in working with kids, teens, and adults with both mental health issues and developmental disabilities like Autism and ADHD. I combine behavioral therapies and play therapy to help kids express their emotions in healthy ways and help parents manage behavior issues at school/home. I also work with individual adults to help them with anxiety, life transitions, relationship concerns, chronic illness, and issues related to ADHD.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
I believe everyone has the ability to change and grow. I believe all humans have the right to lead happy lives free of discrimination. I also believe that as humans, we make mistakes; and we often learn more from those mistakes than we do our successes. Because I truly believe everyone is an individual, I do not only work with one specific therapeutic modality and make sure my clients have individual treatment plans to meet their needs. I am a strong advocate for individuals with developmental disabilities. I truly believe there is no "one size fits all" approach for anything that actually works (even elastic socks come in different sizes!) and everyone should have the right to access the health care and education that is the right fit for them. In order to help fight the stigma of mental health in our culture, I am open about how therapy has helped me heal from my own childhood trauma, and I believe that is an important first step in reaching this goal.
