About My Clients

My clients come from diverse backgrounds but are mostly between 25 and 65 years old and are struggling with anxiety, work-stress, major transitions, and difficulty managing multiple priorities and roles emerging in their lives. Many of my clients present to my office feeling skeptical of or even cynical about therapy and I like to collaborate with them to find a way to make therapy effective, sometimes very funny, and an educational experience where they have total visibility into the process.

My Background and Approach

I draw on my professional experience in technology companies along with my formal training in cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and some newer training in Radically Open DBT (RODBT) for much of my work. Many of my clients have co-occurring anxiety and work-related challenges and we can often work on both issues simultaneously to improve clients' mental health AND work lives. While I draw from scientific evidence of what's proven to work in various studies, those "proven techniques" only work when they are appropriately customized into the life of the particular client in my office. Evidence-based should NOT mean cookie-cutter. I strive to be both scientific and highly personal in my practice.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

I had my first child in graduate school and so the journeys of learning to become a parent and learning to become a counselor (a new career) have always been intertwined. I take great joy in supporting people as they build their families in a multitude of forms and ways and as they build careers that fit their changing lives through that process. I support parents who live together and those who don't; those who identify with various affectional orientations and genders (and those who are going through transitions); non-biological parents who nonetheless fill a parenting role in children's lives; step-parents, foster parents, adoptive parents, and parent-supporters. I also have a passion for improving the healthcare system. I am intermittently involved in our local political action committee for counselors but am always working to advocate for more fairness and better access in the provision of care across the healthcare system.
