The existential "givens" are the phenomena that affect us all: death, meaning making, autonomy, freedom, and isolation. When we confront a "given" that is out of our control, we typically experience pain (ex. "time out," losing a parent, etc.). Additionally, existential therapy focuses on what's unique about your experience, prioritizing your perspective (ex. it's okay to experience something traumatic without having a traumatic response).
