Counselor in Port St. Lucie, FL
I believe that counseling is a collaborative process and that clients are the experts on themselves. It is important for sessions to head in the direction the client chooses and what they feel is most important or pertinent to focus on.
The majority of the interventions that I utilize are CB in nature. I often set goals with clients and ask them to work on specific goals of their choosing between sessions. I believe that understanding our thoughts and core beliefs can help us to change ones that are not helpful or healthy and impact our emotional state and how we cope with difficult emotions. I utilize the ABC technique, journaling, thought stopping and reframing, amongst others.
Many of the interventions that I utilize in session as well as offer clients to try on their own are mindful-based. This includes discussions on spirituality, purpose, and motivation. Mindful meditations and anxiety-reducing techniques are used frequently.
As a woman, I feel the importance of addressing women-specific issues in counseling. My dissertation focuses on sexual culture and unwanted sexual experiences. I have worked with women in counseling ages adolescence and up.
It is extremely important to me to be an affirmative counselor for all affectional orientations, especially due to harmful practices some inflict upon this community. It is important for all of us to have an open and safe environment in which to explore our own desires and not feel pressure to label oneself or feel judged by our identities.
Gender identity is one of my research areas. I have experience working with gender expansive clients and writing letters for hormonal and surgical interventions.
