I love counseling. I realized I wanted a career that spoke to my heart, and this is why I'm here.

EMDR is my favorite modality, it's like magic I swear. Okay, it's not really magic, but it feels that way when you are doing it. It feels silly, but the "bi-lateral" stimulation (which can be feeling a buzz in alternating hands, tapping on alternating knees, or shifting your eyes back and forth as you follow my fingers) while working through past trauma and it reduces the emotional component attached to memories. It's even been approved by the VA for treatment of PTSD and they're tough.
I have worked with Motivational Interviewing since before I began my work as a counselor. This theory helps an individual understand what they can get out of therapy and how to achieve the results they want. It looks at what can you do to help improve your life - finding the areas you would like to improve and then looking at ways to do it better.
I've taken training in the Gottman method of couples counseling. I combine this with what I'm learning through working with domestic violence offenders which is helping me to be aware of a wide range of understanding of the facets of couples relationships.
Abuse is such a broad word, and can encompass far more than being physically struck. I work with emotional, financial, physical abuse and its impacts on your life. Focusing on tools to change behavior combined with relief from emotional triggers can make a big impact on your life and the loved ones around you.
I have worked with victims as well as sex and domestic violence offenders. While victims require healing of the trauma, with offenders we are looking at issues of control and low self esteem. Often the problem can be complex and an individual may be both a victim and an offender and I am prepared to deal with all sides of the issue.
I utilize EMDR and this is one of the tools that has been validated with peer reviewed studies in relieving PTSD quickly and effectively with results that don't fade over time. If you are experiencing nightmares, panic attacks and other anxiety related to a traumatic event, let's work together to resolve the problem.
