About My Clients

We'll explore who you are, where you've been, and who you are becoming in relation to yourself and others. I work with primarily with individual adults and specialize in working with queer clients. Some of the main issues I tend to work with are: Anxiety, Depression, Sexuality Identity, Gender Identity, Life transitions, Trauma/PTSD, Relationship issues, Spirituality, and Grief. I abide by all WPATH (World Professional Association for Transgender Health) guidelines for treatment.

My Background and Approach

While there are all sorts of technical terms that I could use to describe my theoretical orientation - relational, psychodynamic, interpersonal - these words simply mean that I focus on who you are, where you've been, and who you are becoming in relation to yourself and others. I hold a Master's degree in Counseling and a Bachelor's degree in Communications. I advocate for my clients and aim to help them understand that their feelings are real, their needs are important, and that change is possible. The most common forms of therapy I utilize in treatment are based in Psychodynamic, Interpersonal, Feminist, Multicultural, Existential and Narrative theory.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

Tobin Counseling was founded with the goal of making counseling accessible, representative, and welcoming for ALL. This means people of all genders, sexualities, races, ethnicities, and abilities. You are invited to come as you are. I am a queer therapist and advocate for queer, trans, and non-binary folks in my community. I volunteer with the Grand Rapids Pride Center and sponsor a booth at the Pride Festival each year. I believe that therapy ought to recognize the unique intersections of race and mental health. Racism and oppression are realities that many people face - so therapists should feel comfortable addressing these topics.
