Mental Health Counselor in Lake Mary, FL
A large part of my focus as a therapist is encouraging and helping my clients to become more aware of the thoughts passing through their minds as well as the sensations in their body. The body holds many of our memories and is constantly communicating with us on how it feels towards a particular situation. But the body's manner of communicating is often much quieter than our minds and may take some time in order to learn how to hear what the body is trying to tell us.
I have a 20 year mindfulness meditation practice that I bring with me to my clinical practice. My training placed a large emphasis on the benefits of a meditation practice, not only to the practitioner (therapist), but also to their clients. I use this approach to help my clients become more aware of their thoughts and bodily sensations, and the connection between them.
I received my Masters in Psychology with a focus in Contemplative Psychotherapy. My program focused on how to encourage a deeper connection between the client and their mind. There is a large emphasis placed on the client's experience and this can be forwarded by this cultivation of one's awareness of how their mind works.
I have worked in an LGBT community center that was committed to raising awareness and diminishing stereotypes regarding those of the LGBTQIA community. It is a personal mission of mine to take the stigma out of sex and sexuality as well as to serve the communities that get prejudged, including the poly/swinger/kink/sex worker communities.
I served as an intern at a hospice while still in school and felt that I found a certain calling in my life. There is a great honor in being able to be present for someone when they are going through such a painful transition as losing a loved one. I have done individual work as well as have led multiple groups for specific populations (spouses, parents, etc.) of those grieving.
Trans-issues have been a central focus of my personal studies since leaving school. I attend any workshop/conference/presentation that I can to further my education on transgender and gender non-binary/gender non-conforming issues. I have also committed myself to continue to study how the binary system serves to perpetuate misogyny and cis-privilege.
